Southampton No.1 for vehicle exports

A huge cash injection by car giant BMW means Southampton has now been confirmed as the country’s number one port for vehicle exports around the globe.

A spokesman for Associated British Ports, owners and operators of Southampton Docks, said: “This is great news for the city and further underlines the port’s importance not only to the local economy, but to the nation as a whole.’’ Southampton’s enviable position as the UK’s leading vehicle export centre has developed due to port workers who are highly experienced in the handling of vessels and roll on/roll off cargoes, the connections provided by all major deep-sea and short sea shipping lines calling at the docks, and specialist facilities including four dedicated, multi-storey car terminals.

With our headquarters based in Southampton Docks, YA Logistics (UK) Ltd are in a fantastic location to take full advantage of the benefits the expansions will bring including storage areas and better quay facilities for loading and unloading.

Although we ship from all ports in the UK, Southampton is the largest and busiest RoRo port offering services all over the Globe with some of our most common routes serving America and Australia.

Shipping a Rib

One of the latest shipments that we have completed involved moving a 26ft Rib from Dubai to the UK.

The 40ft open top container arrived into Southampton this week and our dedicated team got to work with the task of unloading the container and lifting the Rib onto a trailer.

Firstly we had to lift the container to the floor.

Once the container was placed on the ground we could determine the safest method to unload the rib.

Rather than lifting the rib out from the top of the container we decided it would be safer to lash the cradle and gentle pull the rib onto a skid … this was fast, efficient and problem free.

We then lifted the rib using the 60 ton forklift onto its awaiting trailer.  This is done by using slings safely wrapped around the hull of the rib with the slings attached to the forks on the forklift – once the slings are in place we can lift the rib from its platform and gentle lower it in place on the trailer.

The rib loaded and ready for delivery.

The Worlds Toughest Drive

YA Logistics (UK) Ltd has recently completed the shipping of a Polar vehicle used for an expedition to the South Pole for a Guiness World Record attempt.

For our part we had to liaise with one of the team leaders (Mr Jason De Carterer) and arrange for ‘Polar’ the aptly named vehicle to be loaded into a 20ft container in the UK and shipped to Argentina where it would begin the enormous task of reaching the South Pole.

Polar is a transformed 4×4 with specific modifications to combat the conditions. As the weight of a traditional 4×4 would slow them down everything that was unnecessary was removed, from the standard seats to the wheel arches. This left the vehicle weighing one and half tonnes.

The whole expedition has been televised on the Discovery Channel and really highlighted the dangers this terrain posed.

For more details from the TV programme please click on http://www.discoveryuk.com/web/worlds-toughest-drive/About/meet-polar/

After the successful World attempt we had to ship Polar back to the UK where it would be re-united with its driver.
